Why This Campaign Matters
Background
Airbus is a significant strategic partner of Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). AVIC is a Chinese state-owned defence conglomerate and is a major producer of military aircraft, including combat and attack aircraft.
AVIC is a key supplier to the Myanmar junta of military aircraft. Companies operating under the oversight of AVIC supply weapons – including military aircraft and missiles – to the Myanmar military. These aircraft are being used to commit war crimes in Myanmar.
Supplies from AVIC have continued unabated since the Myanmar military attempted a coup in February 2021. Military aircraft used for bombardments of civilians have been delivered despite public reporting from the United Nations about the Myanmar Air Force’s brutal tactics.
While other international investors have decided to divest from AVIC altogether, Airbus has continued its collaboration with AVIC and maintained its investments in multiple AVIC subsidiaries through AviChina Industry & Technology Company Limited (AviChina) in which Airbus is currently the largest international investor.
AviChina’s products include the K-8 light attack aircraft and the Y-12 multi-purpose aircraft, both of which have been documented in frequent use by the Myanmar Air Force for indiscriminate bombings, including after the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28.
By investing in AviChina, Airbus is sustaining AviChina’s continued development and marketing of military aircraft and its export of these aircraft to the brutal Myanmar junta.
Stop the Export of Aviation Fuel to Myanmar Junta
This campaign aims to stop the export of aviation fuel that enables the Myanmar junta’s airstrikes, which have led to significant civilian casualties.
We urge governments and companies to cut off these supply chains to prevent aviation fuel from reaching Myanmar’s military.” Add a strong call to action to emphasize the urgency of the issue, such as “We need immediate action to save innocent lives.
Goals of the Campaign
- Ensure that Airbus acts in accordance with its human rights responsibilities by using its leverage to stop AVIC’s business with the Myanmar military.
- Ensure that Airbus takes steps to divest from AviChina and end its business relationship with AVIC if transfers of AVIC aircraft, associated equipment and support to Myanmar continue.
- Hold companies and governments involved accountable
- Raise global awareness and mobilize grassroots action against these unethical practices.
- Foster international solidarity by bringing together human rights organizations and advocacy groups to form a united response.
